About My Writing

It was only when I began teaching part time that I returned to my love of writing and have since written seven children's novels and most recently a trilogy for teenagers. The second in the series 'Secret of the Scrolls,' won first prize at the Swanwick Writers' Conference and the Writers’News trophy for 2005. The third book in the trilogy 'Eye of the Mandala' was inspired by the discovery of a 7th century Tibetan manuscript while on an Arts Council sponsored course for writers and won an award at the Winchester Conference in June 2006 for children of 12 +.

I am still hopeful that I will eventually break through into mainstream publishing. I keep trying and have belonged to several online writing courses.

The current novel Narwhal was started in September 2006 and has just been published. It was shortlisted for the Cinnamon Press awards, UKAuthorsmost recent competition and also for the annual Adventures in Fiction award.

When Gray retrieves an engraved narwhal’s tusk from the sea disturbing changes begin to happen to both marine and migratory bird life and to stir the islanders’ primal passions. They suspect Gray’s unusual powers of being able to communicate with seals and other creatures as the cause of the unrest. When they find the tusk he has hidden away they fear that an ancient prophecy threatening the island will come to pass since they have always considered the narwhal as an omen of disaster. Gray finds himself a victim of a confused and complex web of superstition and fear as the islanders decide a ritual sacrifice must be made. How can he prove his innocence and escape their final condemnation of him?
