About My Writing

I have over twenty books of educational materials published with two small but rapidly growing publishers - Classroom Resources - www.classroom-resources.co.uk and Zig Zag Education at www.zigzageducation.co.uk. I receive regular royalty cheques from them. Their royalties are generous, they pay on time and they work hard to promote our work. I'm not rich yet, but it has given me confidence, and allowed me to join the Society of Authors and call myself a writer.

In addition, I have written a book on learning languages for How to Books Ltd. I am also now published by CGP and Letts, as a result of my work for Zig Zag and Classroom Resources.

My real passion is fiction for Young Adults and Children. I have one book out for 8-11, one for Young Adult, several doing the rounds with publishers and agents and I am very proud of my story in "The Lines in the Sand" anthology.

Nick's Gallery

Genre: Fiction - Young Adult
Buy the Book

Nick is dying. Barney spends much of his time keeping him company, helping him to lead an almost normal life and sharing his carefully guarded secret. The two boys often go down to the old harbour, to look at the boats and take photographs.

Barney finds it hard watching his friend getting weaker and weaker. And then there are the other problems. He worries about his realtionship with his first real girlfriend. He worries about his schoolwork.. He is under pressure to perform well as a county swimming champion. And he needs a part time job.

Everything seems to be working out - just - when what he has most been dreading happens. All the other things which could also go wrong do so spectacularly. Then there is a strange shaped room, some ham and mustard sandwiches and a few conversations with a wise old sailor.

It was our way of protesting against that war. Many of us had signed the petition in the Guardian. Now, thanks to Mary Hoffman and Rhiannon Lassiter we had the chance to do something concrete about it.

I wrote "The Gift Child" on my way to visit my supervisor-to-be, for my PhD in Creative and Critical Writing. The creative piece has much the same theme as "The Gift Child". There is an alternative to war.

Food Assembly Instructions

Genre: Cookery
Buy the Book

“OK, you’ve now got a kitchen – but what can you do with it?”

From the outset, Martin James is sympathetic to his readers. By using clear and concise methods of meal creation, he guides even the newest of chefs through the art of cooking.

By his own admission, the worst phrase found in a modern cook book is:

““having previously...”, as in “grill the meat, having previously marinated it in wine for two days”!”

By maintaining logical order and systematic instructions Martin avoids putting his readers in this predicament by explaining any preparation prior to the start of the recipe.

Who says that good food has to be difficult to make? This book gives a wide repertoire of varying dishes including suitable serving suggestions.

With a wide range of mouth-watering desserts, and a wider range modern savoury classics, Martin James has created a feast of enticing delights that will appeal to cooks, families and guests of all ages and tastes.
